GlobalFest Human Rights Forum: Back to Basics runs August 7-11

(Calgary, AB – For Immediate Release) On Tuesday, August 7, GlobalFest’s Human Rights Forum presented by UNACanada – Calgary Branch will take place at the John Dutton Theatre and runs through to Saturday, August 11. This 5-day free event assembles a highly knowledgeable group of academics, community leaders, educators and urban artists in a format that encourages the sharing of experiences, knowledge, and the practical solutions necessary to address issues of racism and discrimination.

This year’s theme is Back to Basics: Healing racism and discrimination through community living. We are stripping our Forum dialogue down to its studs, and returning to the fundamentals. How do we recover from centuries of colonialism and global warfare? How do we heal the wounds of violence in our communities inflicted by racism and discrimination? We start with the basics: taking shelter, earning an income to support our loved ones and ourselves, properly nourishing our bodies and finding courage through education. Finally, we celebrate our self-determination and ability to see the best in others.

The Human Rights Forum features 4 evenings of panel discussion on the themes of Shelter, Good Work, Food Dignity, and Learning Together.

The concluding day of the Forum, Future Generations, features a 1 hour performance by Indigenous LA-based Hip Hop group Lightning Cloud, and a 30 minute performance of Truth Production, a theatre project with a blended cast of Indigenous and non-Indigenous urban artists; creating, working and performing together to celebrate cultural resiliency through artistic performances based on true-life stories of Indigenous people in Alberta and globally.

Admission to the Human Rights Forum is free, and features a pre-event reception with light snacks offered by Indonesian Kitchen. For more information on presenters and scheduling please call the Christal Loewen, GlobalFest Program Coordinator O: 403-569-9679 C: 438-889-8145
