GlobalFest 2019 Human Rights Forum working towards “Breaking the Cycle of Hate”!
(CALGARY, AB – September 10, 2019) – On Wednesday, September 25, 2019, the GlobalFest 2019 Human Rights Forum presented by UNACanada – Calgary Branch will explore experiences with hate from a number of perspectives including those who have been impacted by, been victims of, have incited and who have participated in hate-based organizations. We will look at each individual’s encounters with hate and what motivating factors helped them move forward to work towards their own efforts in “Breaking the Cycle of Hate.”
Daryl Davis will share his experiences talking to members of the KKK. He has become one of the most unique race relation experts and activists today. Daryl will lead breakout sessions at the Forum where he will discuss his work and how he approaches these difficult conversations. How do you start a conversation that doesn’t get shut down immediately or put a person on the defensive so they aren’t listening? These intimate sessions with Daryl in person are not to be missed!
Minoo Homily has been a victim of hate and shares her intimate story with our audience. Learn how she has been able to move on from her experiences in prison in Iran and is now assisting other refugees in Canada.
TM Garret and Tony McAleer will share their backgrounds as former white supremacists. What conditions existed in their lives that we can watch out for in our own communities? What challenges existed when they wanted to change their life paths? How can we support people who want to turn away from a life of hate? What impacts do online communities have on disenfranchised people who might be prone to committing acts of hate?
