Bok! Hello!
The Croatian Heritage Society of Calgary is proud to participate in the One World Festival for the very first time this year. Croatia is best known for its gorgeous Adriatic coast and for being the setting of HBO’s Game of Thrones. But there is so much more to know!
Still a very young country, with only 4 million people, Croatia gained its independence in 1991. Since then, we’ve become known for our athletes, achieving silver in the last FIFA World Cup. Also, our rich history and natural beauty – with 10 sites ascribed to UNESCO’s World Heritage, including Diocletian’s Palace and the old city of Dubrovnik; and 17 properties on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. This includes our lacemaking from the Island of Pag, ‘nijemo kolo’ (silent dancing), ‘ojkanje’ (non-metrical) singing, and Slavonian ‘bećarac’ which you might get the chance to hear when you stop by.
Come visit our pavilion and get to know Croatia beyond our beautiful coastline – see the intricate embroidery of our costumes, join in song with our traditional ‘tamburica’ string band, and learn more about our history and culture.
Until then – Doviđenja! See you!
