When walking into a pavilion, you will be fully immersed with a wide variety of language, culture and artistic expressions of that area. We build a space for every participating culture to show and promote why their culture is important and uniquely their own.

Africa

Africa is home to diverse and vibrant forms of culture. Come explore and share the diversity of the African culture. Our pavilion will showcase traditional African art, crafts and information about many countries in Africa. The rich and diverse African Culture varies not only from one country to another but within each country as well. Please visit us to learn more!

Azerbaijan
Pavilion Coordinator: Irada Shamilova & Fatima Akhundova
Azerbaijanis began immigrating to Canada in the 1980s. Being rich in Oil and Gas, Azerbaijan attracted lots of foreign investments after the collapse of the Soviet Union and developed a strong pool of highly educated Oil and Gas professionals. Therefore, many Azerbaijanis immigrating to Canada don’t think twice when choosing Alberta as their new home.
Azerbaijan has quite a unique geographic landscape. 9 out of 11 existing climatic zones can be found here making tourism one of the fastest-growing industries in the country.
Azerbaijan is also known as Land of Fire thanks to the naturally occurring eternal flames spread across the mountains. Fun fact: this holy fire has burned since ancient times and no rain, snow or wind ever managed to stop it.
Azerbaijan is situated right between Europe and Asia on the shores of the Caspian Sea, that locals call Hazar. The Silk Road historically passed through parts of Azerbaijan. All these factors helped nurture multiculturalism, making ethnic and religious diversity a matter of pride for Azerbaijan and its people. You can find a church, a mosque and a synagogue all within a few blocks from each other here. Many Azerbaijani immigrants choose Canada for that same reason. Canadian Azerbaijanis highly appreciate all the support and opportunity to pass their vibrant traditions, dances, culture and one of a kind, absolutely delicious cuisine on to the next generation here in Canada.
Bangladesh

Nestled in the heart of South Asia, Bangladesh is a country with a captivating cultural landscape shaped by its diverse history, religious influences, and geographical features. From the bustling streets of Dhaka to the serene countryside, Bangladesh offers a mosaic of experiences that reflect its unique identity.
Language and Literature:
Bengali, the official language of Bangladesh, is not only a means of communication but also a source of cultural pride. The works of literary giants like Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam have left an indelible mark on Bengali literature, earning Bangladesh a place of prominence in the global literary scene.
Music and Dance:
Music and dance are integral parts of Bangladeshi culture, expressing a range of emotions from joy to sorrow. Traditional folk music, such as Baul and Bhatiali, resonates with the rhythms of rural life, while classical forms like Rabindra Sangeet evoke a sense of timeless beauty. The graceful movements of traditional dance forms like Manipuri and Nazrul Nritya captivate audiences with their elegance and storytelling prowess.
Festivals and Celebrations:
Bangladesh is a land of festivals, where people from diverse backgrounds come together to celebrate their shared heritage. Pohela Boishakh, the Bengali New Year, is marked by colorful processions, traditional music, and mouthwatering delicacies. Eid-ul-Fitr and Durga Puja are celebrated with equal fervor, reflecting the religious diversity of the country.
Cuisine:
Bangladeshi cuisine is a gastronomic delight, characterized by its bold flavors and aromatic spices. From the iconic biryani to mouthwatering seafood dishes like hilsa curry, Bengali cuisine offers a feast for the senses. Street food delights like puchka (pani puri) and fuchka (spicy snack) tantalize taste buds and showcase the culinary ingenuity of the Bangladeshi people.
Arts and Crafts:
Artisans in Bangladesh have a rich tradition of craftsmanship, producing exquisite textiles, pottery, and handicrafts. The intricate patterns of Jamdani sarees and the vibrant colors of nakshi kantha embroidery are testaments to the country’s artistic heritage. Here we showcase a captivating display where the rich history and vibrant culture of the Siksika (Blackfoot) people come alive!
Our Historical Park, nestled amidst the breathtaking landscapes of our Traditional Territory (Now known as Alberta, Canada), serves as a gateway to the past, inviting visitors to embark on a journey of learning.
You will learn of the struggles, triumphs, and resilience of the Siksika Nation. The Historical Park serves as a bridge between generations, honoring the past while igniting a spark of curiosity and understanding in visitors of all ages.
Beyond its role as an educational hub, the Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park also serves as a vibrant gathering place for community events, cultural celebrations, and artistic performances. We are delighted to announce the return of our Prairie Chicken Dance World Championships that are held every June.
Meet our Blackfoot Historical Park Princess Tia Wolfleg who is the living, breathing heartbeat of our heritage. She’s not just about putting on a show; she’s all about connecting with people on a real level. Whether she’s sharing stories passed down through generations or getting everyone up on their feet for a dance, she’s all about making sure you feel the soul of the Blackfoot culture.

Brazil

Visit our Cultural Pavilion and immerse yourself in the rich Brazilian Culture with arts, crafts, artifacts, and information about the different regions of Brazil.
You will also have the opportunity to speak with native Brazilians living in Calgary and learn about activities offered by the Brazilian Association throughout the year, such as Carnaval, Festa Junina, BrazilFest, Open House Musical, Reveillon, Brazilian Portuguese Language Classes for Adults, Kids School, and more! Don’t forget to try on traditional Brazilian costumes at the BRASIL Cultural Pavilion for a memorable picture!
New this year is the opportunity to try some Brazilian Street Food if you visit the “Sugar Loaf” food truck at the food court.
China

The Northwestern China Community Association of Alberta presents Summer Splendor: traditional Chinese apparel, Chinese calligraphy, and the art of Chinese tea.
Come to GlobalFest 2024, get a name for yourself in Chinese, learn about the invention of fireworks in China, enjoy the visual spectacle of traditional Chinese apparel, take in a demonstration of the exquisite art of Chinese tea…and more!
Our booth has on hand a very accomplished Chinese artist who will, free of charge, select a Chinese name for interested people and then write it out in fine Chinese calligraphy, with a traditional brush, and on traditional calligraphy paper. What a unique souvenir for GlobalFest 2024 in Calgary!
Everyone knows intuitively that fireworks originated in China, but do they know some of the details of the story? At our pavilion we will have a brief video on the Chinese invention of fireworks, narrated by David Curtis Wright, a professor of Chinese history at the University of Calgary. Professor Wright will also be at the booth to answer questions about fireworks in Chinese history.
We will also have on hand experts in traditional Chinese apparel, Chinese tea, and other good things. Come pay our pavilion a visit!
Croatia
Pavilion Coordinators: Kristina Cigić & Maria Barković
Bok! Hello!The Croatian Heritage Society of Calgary is proud to participate in the One World Festival for the very first time this year. Croatia is best known for its gorgeous Adriatic coast and for being the setting of HBO’s Game of Thrones. But there is so much more to know!
Still a very young country, with only 4 million people, Croatia gained its independence in 1991. Since then, we’ve become known for our athletes, achieving silver in the last FIFA World Cup. Also, our rich history and natural beauty – with 10 sites ascribed to UNESCO’s World Heritage, including Diocletian’s Palace and the old city of Dubrovnik; and 17 properties on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. This includes our lacemaking from the Island of Pag, ‘nijemo kolo’ (silent dancing), ‘ojkanje’ (non-metrical) singing, and Slavonian ‘bećarac’ which you might get the chance to hear when you stop by.
Come visit our pavilion and get to know Croatia beyond our beautiful coastline – see the intricate embroidery of our costumes, join in song with our traditional ‘tamburica’ string band, and learn more about our history and culture.

Ghana
Pavilion Coordinator: Charles Odame
Nestled along the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean, Ghana is a vibrant country in West Africa, brimming with rich cultural heritage and a deep sense of history. At Globalfest 2024, the Ghana Cultural Pavilion invites visitors to immerse themselves in the diverse traditions, arts, and flavors that make Ghana a jewel of the African continent.
Language and Literature.
The linguistic landscape of Ghana is as diverse as its culture, with English as the official language, accompanied by a multitude of indigenous languages including Akan, Ewe, and Ga. Ghanaian literature is a significant cultural pillar, with renowned authors such as Ayi Kwei Armah and Ama Ata Aidoo offering profound insights into Ghanaian society, history, and the African experience. Their works, along with oral traditions passed down through generations, continue to shape the nation’s literary identity.
Music and Dance
Ghana’s musical heritage is a vibrant fusion of traditional and contemporary sounds. Highlife music, characterized by its jazzy horns and rhythmic beats, has long been a staple, while Hiplife, a genre that blends hip hop with highlife, reflects the dynamic spirit of modern Ghana. Traditional drumming and dance, such as the Adowa, Kpanlogo, and Damba dances, are integral to cultural ceremonies and storytelling, captivating audiences with their rhythmic complexity and expressive movements.Festivals and Celebrations
Ghana is renowned for its colorful festivals, each offering a unique window into its rich cultural tapestry. The Homowo Festival, celebrated by the Ga people, is a lively event marked by traditional dances, music, and feasting, commemorating the end of a historic famine. The Ashanti people celebrate Akwasidae, a festival that honors their ancestors and showcases the splendor of the Ashanti kingdom with elaborate ceremonies and the display of royal regalia. The country’s largest festival, Panafest, is a biennial celebration that promotes Pan-Africanism and commemorates the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.
Cuisine
Ghanaian cuisine is a delightful adventure for the palate, featuring bold flavors and a variety of spices. Signature dishes include jollof rice, a flavorful one-pot dish made with tomatoes, onions, and spices, often served with fried plantains and grilled meat. Another staple is fufu, a dough-like food typically made from cassava and plantain, which is enjoyed with a variety of soups and stews such as groundnut soup and light soup. Street food, including kelewele (spicy fried plantains) and waakye (a rice and beans dish), offers a taste of Ghana’s culinary ingenuity and cultural heritage.
Arts and Crafts
Ghana’s artistic traditions are showcased through its exquisite crafts and textiles. The Kente cloth, known for its vibrant colors and intricate patterns, is a symbol of Ghanaian identity and cultural pride. Each pattern has a specific meaning, often reflecting historical events, proverbs, or local lore. The art of Adinkra, symbolic cloth printing, and intricate beadwork are also prominent, reflecting the country’s rich artisanal heritage. Markets such as Accra’s Makola Market and Kumasi’s Kejetia Market are treasure troves of handmade goods, offering everything from woven baskets to brass jewelry.

Hungary

Welcome to the Hungarian pavilion at GlobalFest – our community is thrilled to share our rich culture with you for the third year in a row! This is a very special year for our Hungarian community here in Calgary, celebrating 50 successful years for the Vadrozsa Hungarian Folk Dancers. This thriving community shows a steady commitment to growth and learning locally and abroad. Hungarian culture is ripe with beautiful folk art, costumes, music, dance, and of course, deliciously hearty food! Stop by our booth and meet members of the community who immigrated from Hungary during the revolution, as well as their children and other family members who have lived here their whole lives, but have managed to keep the tie to their roots and culture strong in Canada. Our group is excited to also have the opportunity to share our love of traditional folk dances with you, so be sure to look out for us on the stage!
India
Pavilion Coordinator: Niyanta Kotecha
India’s astounding diversity of religions, languages, and cultures is unique and unparalleled. The society is a vast subcontinent, varied and complex in its rich heritage, and is among the oldest in the world. This year our pavilion will consist of an excellent collection of Indian handicrafts, artefacts and jewelry as well as Henna/Mehendi painting. Henna/Mehendi is a form of body art from Ancient India, in which decorative designs are created on a person’s body, using a paste, created from the powdered dry leaves of the henna plant (Lawsonia inermis), this is believed to bring good luck to the person wearing the Henna. This year we will also be showcasing both traditional and modern Indian culture in the form of 3 different dance performances by our very talented artists of varying age groups. These dances will reflect India’s vastly diverse culture of different states. The costumes of all the dancers will be a glamorous display of Indian ethnic wear.
Indonesia
Pavilion Coordinator: Julia Sugityo
The Indonesia Pavilion is the home of diversity. Through our brief video presentation, we will share our culture which is filled with vibrant, colorful, and attractive costumes, dances and music, and delicious Indonesian food. It will give you an opportunity to get familiar with traditional clothing from various regions in Indonesia, arts and local crafts. You can also learn common phrases in Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) with our hosts at Pavilion. We love to showcase Indonesian traditional dances, and Angklung music to the local communities in Calgary.
This year, we will showcase our 3 Indonesian dances, plate dance, Petruk Dance, and fun and upbeat line dancing that audiences can participate in and enjoy. We will also feature our Angklung group that plays Indonesian folk songs and favorite Country and Pop songs like Take me home Country Road, I have a Dream, Could I have this dance, and more.
The Angklung is a very unique musical instrument that is a new adventure for Canadian audiences. It is made out of bamboo tubes attached to a bamboo frame. These tubes are carved and tuned to octaves. Each Angklung creates a resonant, deep, and prolonged pitch when struck. This musical instrument can be played by a single person or a group like us.
Our dance and Angklung groups are excited to share our culture with you. You do not want to miss it. Please come and look out for us on the stage.
Iran

Welcome to the Iran Pavilion at GlobalFest! Step into a world where you can enjoy the soothing sounds of traditional Persian music and admire beautiful artifacts. Our main highlight this year is “The Legacy of Persian Civilization and Poetry” where you can learn about Iran’s extensive history and explore the beautiful artistry of famous poets such as Rumi. Don’t miss out on having flavourful and unique Iranian treats. We also offer fun workshops where you can learn about the Persian Empire timeline and different aspects of our fascinating culture.
Come and experience Iranian culture in a friendly setting that celebrates our heritage!
Japan

Whether you’re gearing up to visit Japan with the recent re-launch of direct flights or simply want to learn more about this fascinating nation, make sure to stop by the Japan Pavilion’s booth. Hosted by the Calgary Japanese Community Association, the booth offers a wealth of information and captivating cultural displays.
Experience the charm of a cozy Japanese street-style mini market, where you can discover must-visit hotspots in Japan and enjoy snacks and drinks imported directly from Japan. Explore numerous opportunities in Calgary to immerse yourself in Japanese culture. Plus, you’ll have the chance to chat with students from Japan about their hometowns, potentially uncovering hidden gems in the mini Japanese market. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to dive into the wonders of Japan right here in Globalfest!
Korea
Pavilion Coordinator: Anna Jun
Through the Global Fest event, we will showcase Korean culture at the Korean Pavilion, offering a photo zone with a traditional Korean backdrop for visitors to take pictures and learn about our culture. Additionally, we will have booths dedicated to promoting K-culture, introducing Korean tourism, offering Korean food, games, and products for visitors to experience. This opportunity will allow us to promote traditional Korean culture, introduce Korean products, and facilitate the sharing of information with other countries, thereby fostering greater understanding of our nation.
The background we will use for photo booth is called Irworobongdo. Irworobongdo is a Korean folding screen highly stylized landscape painting of sun and moon, five peaks which always was set behind Eojwa, the king’s royal throne during the Joseon Dynasty. It literally means “Painting of the Sun, Moon and the Five Peaks.” The sun and moon symbolize the king and queen while the five peaks denotes a mythical place. The screen serves to display the majesty of the Joseon royal court. The scene depicts a burning red sun, a full moon, five craggy peaks, and two fast-flowing streams with cascades, all flanked by a pair of conifers.
Kurdistan

Mexico
Pavilion Coordinator: Cynthya Bringas
Hola Amigos, come experience the hospitality of Mexican people.
Mexico is a unique country with endless distinct cultural facets, including its history, arts, music nature and daily modern life. Mexico’s rich culture is the direct result of amalgamation of ancient cultures such as Aztecs, Mayans and Zapotecas and varies migration and immigrations patterns that Mexico has undergone throughout its Mesoamerican and Colonial history.
The unbreakable link of ancient traditions and believes gave way to the unique blend of indigenous ideology and catholicism which make up modern Mexico.
We see the evolution of these customs reflected not only in the traditions and physical characteristics of Mexicans today but also in Mexico’s architecture. Pyramids and traditional Roman Catholic churches are seen throughout the country. One can even find a blend of indigenous, Spanish and modern architecture together as seen in the prominent Plaza of the three cultures. Folkloric dances reflect part of historic Mexican identity and way of life. Each region has its unique style of music and dance base on the landscape, historical events and cultural background of the settlers who emigrated there. Viva la danza group founded in 2007 is committed to sharing the Mexican folklore and dances from all over Mexico because they believe that music and dance are one way to preserve Mexican values that also enhance our souls. Our pavilion invites you to explore different paths of Mexico throughout our beautiful displays and activities.

Pakistan

Assalamu Alaikum (Kush Amdead) means welcome to the Pakistan Pavilion.
Stretching from the mighty Himalayas in the north to the vast Arabian Sea, Pakistan truly is a gateway between continents, cultures, civilizations and history. The Pakistan Punjabi Culture Council Of North America has worked hard to preserve and promote this culture within Canada. Pakistani have been making Alberta their home for many years. Visiting the Pakistan Pavilion reveals a rich tapestry of languages, customs and traditions. Come and see some of the world’s most beautiful cultural artifacts including clothing, jewelry, handicrafts, embroidered shawls and henna tattoos. We promise that a visit to the Pakistan Pavilion will feel as though the silk and spice trading routes of the ancient past have found their way to Calgary!

The southern region of the Philippines, encompassing the vast islands of Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago, has been the resilient home of Filipino Muslims since the 14th century. Their history is a testament to their unwavering strength, a crucial component of the country’s historical development.
The Muslim ethnic groups in Mindanao and Sulu are united by ideological solid and geographical ties. They are culturally linked to Southeast Asian Muslim countries and, with a 500-year political history in the Philippines, have the most extended political experience among all groups.
The culture of Philippine Muslims is a fascinating fusion of Islam and Adat, a blend that harmoniously combines pre-Islamic culture with the philosophical interpretation of Islam. With eleven groups in the region, their shared language is still actively spoken, fostering a strong sense of community.
Their music, dance, and costumes are a captivating kaleidoscope of Arabian and Indo-Malayan influences, intriguingly capturing the unique mosaic of Filipino culture.
Romania

Scotland

Faile oirbh uile! Welcome, everyone!
Alberta and Scotland have a long, shared history of cultural interaction, as you can see from the many placenames of Scottish origin that crop up around the province. These include Canmore (from the Scottish Gaelic ceann mòr, meaning ‘big head’), Banff (originally from the Scottish Gaelic Banbha, a Scottish land goddess who also gave her name to a town in Scotland), Airdrie (from the Scottish Gaelic àrd ruighe, meaning ‘high flats’), and even Calgary itself (named after a beach called Calgairidh, in the Scottish Isle of Mull, the name of which comes in turn from the Scottish Gaelic caladh gàraidh, meaning ‘garden harbor’).
If you come to our pavilion, we’ll help you get further acquainted with Scottish culture! We’ll teach you some Scottish Gaelic, show you some traditional Scottish dances, teach you how to write your name in Ogham (the ancient Gaelic alphabet), and let you get your photo taken with a life-size picture of Niseag (that is, Nessie – the Loch Ness monster)! If you want to, you can also buy Scottish-themed wears from local Calgarian merchants, and even join the St. Andrew-Caledonian Society (Calgary’s local Scottish Society)!

Slovenia

Welcome to Slovenia. You can’t spell Slovenia without love. We at the Slovensko Kanadsko Društvo – Calgary, (Slovenian Canadian Club of Calgary), are excited to participate in our fifth Globalfest. We would like to take you on a journey to this South Central European country of just over 2 million people. From the majestic Alps to the warm Adriatic Sea, forest, caves and plains, Slovenia and their people have much to offer. Come join Slovenian – Canadians and explore all your senses with us!
Thailand
Pavilion Coordinator: Nivat (Mark) Chainarongpinij
Thailand is a kingdom of wonder, filled with spectacular natural, cultural, and historical attractions. Thailand has a rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes of great natural beauty featuring Buddhist temples, exotic wildlife, and spectacular islands and beaches. Along with a fascinating history and a unique culture that includes delectable Thai food and massage, Thailand features a modern capital city, and friendly people who epitomize Thailand’s “land of smiles” reputation.
Visit our Pavilion to see the beautiful scenery of the five regions of Thailand and come out to watch our classical Thai Dance performances nightly on the GlobalFest stages.
The Alberta Thai-Canadian Association (Calgary), (ATCA), was formed in 2002 to promote friendship and good understanding between Thai’s and Canadians, to maintain and promote the cultural heritage of Thailand and to provide opportunities for social activities for its’ members.
Thailand is predominantly the Buddhist Kingdom in Southeast Asia. It has an area about the same as Alberta but a population of 70 million. Thailand shares borders with Myanmar to the west and north, Laos to the north-east, Kampuchea to the east, and Malaysia to the south. Thailand lies within the humid tropics and remains hot throughout the year. Average temperatures are about 29 °C. There are three seasons: the cool season (November to March), the hot season (April to May), and the rainy season (June to October). Thailand is filled with spectacular natural, cultural, and historical attractions and has a rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes of great natural beauty featuring Buddhist temples, exotic wildlife, and spectacular islands and beaches. Along with a fascinating history and a unique culture that includes delectable Thai food and massage, Thailand features a modern capital city, and friendly people who epitomize Thailand’s “land of smiles” reputation.
Dance is Thailand’s main dramatic art form and can be divided into two major categories: high art (classical dance) and low art (folk dance). The ATCA sponsors its’ own Thai Dance group comprised of members volunteering their time to learn and perform classical and folk dances. The beautiful girls dance barefoot with great smiles, and graceful and delicate movements in their elaborate costumes. The dances are hypnotic and follow lovely rhythms made from oriental musical instruments. The group has performed at dozens of cultural events over the years including GlobalFest and the Calgary Stampede.

Welcome to Turkiye! We have officially changed our name with the UN so that future generations will not be confused with the bird, turkey. Turkiye sits at the crossroads of thousands of years of civilizations. We are surrounded by the rich culture and heritage of those who have come and stayed on these vast lands between Europe and Asia. Among the many of the wonders of Turkiye, Cappadocia, Ephesus, Nemrut, Hagia Sophia, and Troya stand out as millions of tourists flock to Turkiye to see the sights and the history. What most people take away after they are immersed in the stunning diversity is the warmth and generosity of the people of Turkiye.
We as Turks, owe most of the industrialization and unification to the founder of the Republic of Turkiye to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. He has often been praised by many countries around the world as a true hero, taking a mostly rural illiterate society of many different ethnic groups and defining a country based on values, beliefs and the power of equality. He transformed the alphabet, the calendar and secularized Turkiye into a modern state. Although his brilliant foresight has been tested in recent decades, most Turks are proud of the leader whom we were very fortunate to have had. Come to the TURKIYE Pavilion and start a discussion with us and experience the unique cultural and historical significance of our great country.

We will be happy to meet with you, and share information about our beautiful country with a long history, diverse traditions and customs, and a wonderful language. You will be welcomed and immersed in the traditions of Ukraine through handmade selections of the very best and unique custom pieces of art combined with an atmosphere of fun and festivity.
